Oral Polio Vaccine is for prevention of Poliomyelitis disease.
Poliomyelitis is often called polio or infantile paralysis.
Commonly there is a public conception, specially in lesser educated society that Polio vaccination is for strengthening the body and prevent any paralysis. No. It only prevents the poliomyelitis disease. Likewise, Tetanus Toxoid only prevents Tetanus disease. It does not give protection against other bacterial infections causeded by cuts/ abrasion etc. You have to take antiseptic measures to other bacterial infections like staphylococcus, streptococcus etc. which causes pus formation at the end. Now, we shall discuss about tetanus after a little while. Before it I shall draw your attention to a issue related to the resistance during pulse polio campaign. Some persons from certain community who keeps more faith in rumours than upon scientific facts of a campaign bring the lame excuses forward that the polio vaccination has harmed their known persons/ children, as if it caused paralysis. The Oral Polio Vaccine is completely safe. If any one accuses of paralysis from OPV it is absolutely false. There are so many causes of paralysis and any such disease may have coincided with the Polio Immunisation. Causes of paralysis : The four most common cause of paralysis are -
Tetanus is preventable by tetanus toxoid. Besides the routine immunisation any person is protected from Tetanus by the tetanus toxoid injection in every 10 years. If its is not done then after exposure to the infection one should take the Tetanus immunoglobulin or ATS to prevent Tetanus disease. Thanks for your patient reading.
